Canon History

Alayre was abandoned by his mother when he was eleven and was recruited by the Order. Growing up in the Order was difficult but Alayre made a name for himself through his swordsmanship. Capable of wielding two swords rather than one, the boy managed to impress his betters. Outside of combat, Alayre was a devout follower of the Chantry's teachings. It's because of this that he rose up in the ranks swiftly. In his late twenties or so, he was made Knight-Captain at some far out tower south of Orlais locally called Pharos. New to the role of captain, Alayre didn't know that he would have his faith in Andraste tested years later.

During the Mage-Templar War, tempers flared and schism formed between the Circle of Magi and the Chantry. Order was enforced swiftly with blades and many were left dead following the revolt at the White Spire in Val Royeaux. The brutality of the conflict rippled throughout Ferelden and eventually would reach Orlais. With the possibilities of mage-templar conflicts crossing over; Empress Celene I appealed for the Divine to quell any possible chances for rebellion and used her military to fight the rebellion within. However, Alayre's tower of Pharos eventually came under siege and war broke out there. He assumed the role of Knight-Commander when the previous one died in battle.

Forced to take up arms against mages and colleagues alike, Alayre locked the tower to seal the rebellion within. Many of the rogue mages became abominations and completely ravished the tower. With just a ragtag group of survivors; Alayre defeated them. The aftermath of the war was a bloody one but not a single admonition escaped that tower. Pharos was secured. Shortly after his victory at Pharos, Alayre officially earned the title of Knight-Commander.

When the Inquisition came to be, Alayre saw this as the perfect chance to be freed of the Order and Chantry both. He noticed for the need for reform within the Order thanks to Meredith's exploits and knew he couldn't make the necessary changes while still under the Chantry's supervision. Along with him, the survivors of that harrowing battle at Pharos decided to follow his lead and join with the Inquisition. While most of his Templar agreed with Alayre's decision, five out of the twenty went renegade.

Personality

Zargabaath is a man known for both his modesty and sternness. Usually resigning himself to silence, Zargabaath is a man of few words. He typically doesn't voice his opinions openly like his fellow colleagues, and is more often than not content in observing. He's the silent observer, the kind of fellow who much rather watch from the shadows than announce himself. While often lingers behind fellow Judge Magisters in combat, Zargabaath is certainly a man to be both respected and feared. Having sworn absolutely fealty not only House Solidor but to the Empire itself; Zargabaath fights not only out of duty but rather out of belief. He believes in the Empire and believes in fighting for what is just regardless the consequences.

From what little we see of Zargabaath in the actual game certainly leaves the audience with an "idea" of how he is. When Drace speaks freely of her dislike of Vayne, it's Zargabaath who tells her not concern of herself of matters that do not concern her. His warning to Drace of course fall upon deaf ears, but Zargabaath clearly is self-conscious of his role as Judge Magister. While Drace might deem it right to publicly criticize Vayne; he does not. The reason for this is perhaps because of his fealty.

In a small exchange between Drace and Zargabaath, the audience take a peek into the his thoughts. Zargabaath doesn't concern himself with matters that doesn't concern him or the Empire, but he also doesn't take sport in idle gossip either. He knows that Drace's comment is borderline insubordination, and calls her out on it.

When Drace is sentenced to execution at the hands of her fellow judges, it's Zargabaath who pleads for life. It's in this rare moment of shock and anguish, Zargabaath contradicts himself. He knew there was no saving Drace but still dared to try. In this moment, we see a different side of Zargabaath's fiercely loyal persona. While he is indeed loyal to Vayne, he's also very much loyal to the Empire itself. He's more loyal to the idea and her people than strictly royalty, and later on in the story-line begins to act on his own accord. Unlike his fellow colleagues, it's here that we see that Zargabaath possesses a conscience.

Zargabaath has a knack for subtlety makes him forgettable for some but he's actually quite a memorable character. His dialogue and actions give away his true personality in subtle ways. Zargabaath is the kind of person who would sacrifice himself for a greater good as displayed during the end of game. Without a second thought, Zargabaath volunteers his life and the lives of his fleet to stop the Sky Fortress Bahamut from crashing on Rabanstre. He's the only judge besides Gabranth to show such character growth. This is why Zargabaath is a character worth exploring. He's silent and reserved mannerisms are quite refreshing in a tale that boasts all sorts of whimsical and sometimes devious characters.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Duty & Honour
If there's one thing to note about Alayre is his strong sense of duty. Bound by his honour, Alayre will stop at nothing to do what is just even if it means harming a potential ally. His sense of justice outweighs all personal interests and desires for he believes in doing for the greater good rather than himself. His strong desire for righting wrongs stems from the harshness of his upbringing. While his virtuous honour stems from the fact that his lord father lacked any.

Willpower & Selflessness
Alayre is a man who possesses extraordinary willpower to overcome the odds placed before him. His eagerness to change Orlais is what force himself to believe in his own power to force this change to be. He is a driven individual in every sense of the word and is unrelenting in his quest to bring about a revolution. In the same turn, Alayre is selfless in his actions and puts the care of his men over himself. He'll try to move both heaven and earth to assist his allies at the cost of his own reputation.

Combat
Master of the Twofold Swords, Alayre is an ambidextrous swordsman with unprecedented skill. His ability to wield two blades at once is more of a roguish skill but it's a technique he learned from his father who was also a duo blade swordsman. His fighting style is very fluid and graceful with various stances of form he'll perform during combat. One such stance is the "Cross" which he holds the Stoneblade vertically and the lighter sword horizontally as a defensive stance. While there's many skeptics who find fault within the duo wielding technique, Alayre absurdly excells at it because of his quick reaction time and his ability maintain such haste in battle. Despite being armored from head-to-toe, Alayre is rather quick.

Stubbornness
Despite Alayre being quite agreeable most of the time, he's horrifically stubborn and doesn't easily give unto the ideals of others. He'll always try to find fault within others arguments and will poke as many holes as necessary in their logic to uphold his beliefs. He's stubborn like that especially when it comes down to his honour.

Workaholic
Unless stopped, Alayre will work day and night if necessary to finish a goal or project. The fact that he's willing to work tirelessly for his goals is admirable but woefully foolish. The man doesn't know his limits will work himself into an early grave if he isn't forced to rest. Alayre is typically rest broken normally.

Iceblade & Melody Moon

The Iceblade is a sword allegedly carved out of ice that allegedly has the magical property to cast Winter's Grasp which effectively turns opponents into ice. While the effects of the spell is rare at best, there's a ten percent chance of opponents being frozen temporarily.

The Melody Moon is a simple and light short sword designed for quick and nimble strikes. Unlike the Iceblade, this sword doesn't contain any poison and was crafted as a normal sword. The only significance about this sword is that it has a slight silver glow during evening hence the name. It's said to be an elven blade.

Durandal
Named after a fabled blade, Durandal is the name of Alayre's white mare. Bred in Olrais, Durandal was a gift from his father's family when he left to join the Templar. The horse is known for its swiftness on the battlefield and answers to no one but him.

Motivation

With renegade rogues terrorizing the Hinterlands and the desperate need for reform within the Order, Alayre joins the Inquisition to right the wrongdoings done by those of the Templar Order. His strong sense of justice literally brings him to the doorstep of Skyhold. He's tired of bowing down to unworthy masters and tired of having a "master" in general. Alayre refuses to be pawn any longer and is willing to arrange both heaven and earth if need be to restore the Order to its former brilliance.
